Snow showers due in region, with temperatures in mid-30s

Some snow showers are expected in Greater Boston on Wednesday, but with temperatures breaking above the freezing mark for part of the day, little or no accumulation is expected, the National Weather Service said.

The scattered show showers are due to arrive in the Bay State by late morning and early afternoon, and could deliver up to two inches of new snow in some areas, though most areas will only see a dusting, forecasters wrote.

“While much of the activity will be light, localized, heavier snow showers may result in a quick inch or two in a short time,’’ forecasters cautioned. “This would result in roads quickly becoming snow-covered and briefly poor visibility.”

Temperatures Wednesday will break into the mid-30s before dropping into the 20s and teens overnight in Greater Boston, forecaster said.

More light snowfall is expected throughout Thursday, similar to Wednesday, weather service meteorologist Bill Simpson said.

Preliminary models show about an inch of snow accumulating Thursday, with highs in the low 30s. Snow is expected to be slightly heavier in the afternoon, Simpson said.

By the weekend, an Arctic air mass will arrive, bringing with it “one of the coldest air masses we have seen in some time,’’ forecasters wrote.

Wind chills will drop well below zero into Sunday. Conditions are expected to be “brutal,” Simpson said.
