Three people, including a 10-year-old girl and a man in a wheelchair, were struck by a vehicle in Dorchester on Tuesday night, police said.

The crash occurred near 575 Blue Hill Avenue shortly after 8:30 pm.

A Boston police official at the scene who declined to be named said the victims were a 10-year-old girl, her 40-year-old father, and a 22-year-old man in a wheelchair who is a family friend.

All three people were taken to area hospitals, the official said, and the father suffered severe head and face injuries. The girl’s injuries were minor, and the extent of the 22-year-old’s injuries were not known.

The police official said the driver stopped at the scene and no charges had been sought as of late Tuesday night.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A witness at the scene who would not give her full name said the three victims were crossing the street when the driver slowed down in an apparent effort to let them continue on. But then, she said, the driver accelerated and struck the trio, “and they just flew.”

She said the driver exited his car and appeared distraught, “holding his head like ‘oh my gosh.’ ... It was horrific.”

The woman said paramedics arrived and attended to all three victims, who appeared conscious when they were being placed into waiting ambulances.

Conditions of the victims were not known late Tuesday night.

The driver’s gray, four-door vehicle remained at the scene around 9:30 p.m. It had heavy front-end damage, including a partially shattered windshield. A pool of blood was visible near the car.

A stretch of Blue Hill Avenue was closed off with police tape while uniformed officers investigated.

At least eight evidence markers were visible at the crash scene.

A man identified by witnesses as the driver was seen talking to an officer near the crash scene around 9:40 p.m. He sat slumped on a bench and repeatedly brought a hand to his face, appearing emotional as he spoke to the officer.

A pink plastic bag was marked off with an evidence cone at the scene, which was being photographed by a police Crime Scene Response Unit shortly before 10 p.m. An object that appeared to be part of a wheelchair was also visible near the car.

Around 10:15 p.m., the man identified as the driver was seen speaking with three uniformed officers. He repeatedly pointed in the direction of Seaver Street, which is located off Blue Hill Avenue near the crash scene. The man then walked with the officers first to his vehicle and then to the other side of Blue Hill Avenue.

Shortly before 10:45 pm, a Crime Scene Response investigator opened the front driver and passenger side doors of the car and looked briefly inside the vehicle.

The driver was allowed to leave the scene with another man who picked him up around 11 pm. He did not speak to reporters.
