Norwood meeting bans nonmedical pot sales

Norwood Town Meeting voters said no to nonmedical marijuana sales, but yes to several other proposals after meeting five nights this month to complete annual and special town meeting business.

Thomas McQuaid, who is likely the town’s fifth and last town clerk/accountant, said residents agreed to split his job into two positions, like in many other communities. Otherwise, he said, it might have hampered the town’s ability to fill the position in the future.

He said in a phone interview Tuesday that the move still needs state approval, but that he didn’t think it would be a problem with his letter endorsing it. He said it should be in effect by July 1 of next year.

Voters also adopted a Community Preservation Act bylaw that will impose a 1 percent tax on home assessments beyond the first $100,000, and it’s expected to raise $640,000 per year, McQuaid said.

Voters approved an operating budget of $183.7 million for next year; capital projects winning approval included $1 million for town hall renovations and $1.1 million for repairs to St. Gabriel’s Chapel at HIghland Cemetery.
