Heath Rollins is named Wayland’s new athletic director

Heath Rollins, who oversaw Dover-Sherborn High School's sports programs for 10 years, has been named the new athletic director for the Wayland Public Schools.

Rollins, a graduate of Springfield College, will begin his new job on Aug. 10, Wayland High principal Allyson Mizoguchi announced in a statement. He will replace Steve Cass, whose contract was not renewed.

"It is clear from Mr. Rollins' own experience and from those who know him well that he embodies the belief that athletics plays a vital role in the development of positive values, skills, and relationships among our youth," Mizoguchi said.

Rollins gained experience in athletic administration at an international school, a Division III college, and a private school before becoming athletic director at Dover-Sherborn High, Mizoguchi said.

"His references speak highly of Mr. Rollins' ability to plan strategically, build consensus, and attend to both the little details and the big picture," Mizoguchi said. "They also note his supportive relationships with coaches and student athletes and his calm, unflappable nature."

The School Committee voted in June to enlist outside agencies to help investigate allegations by Cass that the sports department is rife with problems ranging from misused funds to discriminatory practices against girls' teams.

It also provided funding for a schoolwide survey on the athletic department that will be conducted by Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport.

"We are fortunate that Mr. Rollins will join us at this point in the life of Wayland Athletics as we move forward with our continued commitment to the best experience for our student athletes," Mizoguchi said.
