Psychiatric patient charged in death

NEW YORK — A patient at a New York City psychiatric center was charged with killing another patient at the facility, police said Saturday. Brett Smith, 19, of the Bronx, was charged with second-degree murder, officials said. He was arrested after Leon Little, 51, was found unconscious inside the Bronx Psychiatric Center shortly before 8 p.m. Friday. Officers responding to a 911 call found Little unconscious and unresponsive with abrasions on his throat. (AP)

Hiker, 60, missing since Monday

PORT ANGELES — Teams resumed a search Saturday for a 60-year-old man missing in Washington’s Olympic National Park. Jim Griffin went for a hike Monday on the Olympic Hot Springs Trail. His friends reported him missing Wednesday night after he failed to show up at a Christmas Eve dinner. The National Park Service said three searchers spent that night looking for him, and two two-person teams looked for him on Thursday. In the afternoon, they found his day pack 50 feet off the trail. George H.W. Bush remains in hospital

HOUSTON — Former President George H.W. Bush spent a fourth night in a Houston hospital where he is being treated after experiencing shortness of breath last week. Family spokesman Jim McGrath said the 90-year-old Bush ‘‘remains in high spirits and continues to make progress.’’ No other details were disclosed. Bush was taken to Houston’s Methodist Hospital on Tuesday as a precaution. He spent nearly two months there two years ago for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough and other issues. (AP)
