Classes held after threats in 3 states

MIAMI — Students in Florida, Texas, and California headed to school as usual Thursday, hours after officials said districts received threats similar to those that closed Los Angeles' massive school system earlier this week.

In Indiana, two smaller school districts canceled classes Thursday after receiving threats, and two students were arrested.

But classes went on as scheduled in Houston, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale Fla. Districts reported receiving the threats via e-mail late Wednesday evening but said they turned out to be ''less than credible.''

The developments come on the heels of Tuesday's districtwide closure in Los Angeles, sparked by an e-mail threatening a large-scale attack. New York City schools received a similar threat, but officials there concluded it was a hoax.

The closure of a large US district because of threats is rare, and the move in Los Angeles — with the nation's second-largest school system — reflected the lingering unease in Southern California after the attack that killed 14 people at a holiday luncheon two weeks ago in San Bernardino.

Some of the districts affected by the latest threats are among the nation's largest — Miami ranks fourth, Fort Lauderdale's Broward County system is sixth, Houston seventh, Orlando 10th, and Dallas 14th.
