Hope running out for trapped miners in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA — Honduran officials said Saturday they are losing hope that any of eight workers who are still trapped underground survived the collapse of a small gold mine. Three other miners were rescued Friday after spending more than two days trapped. Officials said the rescued miners are in relatively good health, but were exhausted, dehydrated, and bruised. (AP)

4 die in bombing near parliament

MOGADISHU — Four people were killed Saturday when a car that was laden with explosives blew up near the parliament building in the Somali capital, a police official said Saturday. The Somali terrorist group al-Shabab, which has recently targeted parliamentarians, claimed responsibility. The car exploded at a checkpoint where it had been stopped by Somali troops. The dead were soldiers and refugees. (AP)

Jill Biden travels to eastern Congo

BUKAVU — Jill Biden, the wife of the US vice president, traveled Saturday to conflict-wracked eastern Congo, where she met with survivors of sexual violence as part of her three-nation tour of the continent. Her trip to Zambia, Congo, and Sierra Leone, focused on highlighting issues facing women and girls, is her third to Africa since Joe Biden became vice president. (AP)

Stranded nurses return home

NEW DELHI — Dozens of Indian nurses who had been stranded in Iraqi territory held by Islamic extremists were greeted with hugs and flowers on Saturday as they returned home to southern India. The 46 women had been holed up for more than a week in Tikrit, where fighters of the Islamic State group have taken over. They finally crossed over Friday into a largely autonomous Kurdish region.
