NFL was right not to punish Rams players over Ferguson protest

It was the players’ way of signaling solidarity with the thousands, in Ferguson and beyond, who have protested a grand jury’s decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the killing of Michael Brown. And it was the kind of peaceful statement that should be part of the public discourse after a wrenching, divisive event. But the St. Louis Police Officers Association, declaring the gesture “tasteless, offensive, and inflammatory,” demanded that the NFL punish the players and issue a public apology.
