Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski was taken off the Gillette Stadium field on a cart in the third quarter Sunday after suffering what appeared to be a devastating right knee injury.
Gronkowski raised his right arm to the crowd as he was carted off as he sat next to team physician Thomas Gill. Gronkowski was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
A league source told the Globe that Gronkowski would undergo an MRI Monday; another source said the team fears he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which would end his season.
Gronkowski hauled in a 21-yard seam pass from Tom Brady, but was hit low by Browns safety T.J. Ward.
The Globe’s Ben Volin tweeted that Browns players used the words “nasty” and “gruesome” to describe the injury.
Gronkowski missed the first six games of the season recovering from a broken left forearm and offseason back surgery.
