Rajai Davis’s ninth-inning grand slam lifts Tigers

For the Detroit Tigers, a walkoff grand slam happens like clockwork. Once every 10 years, it’s time to hit another one.

On the day the franchise honored the 30th anniversary of the 1984 World Series team, Rajai Davis hit his third career grand slam with one out in the ninth, giving the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Oakland A’s on Monday night.

‘‘I can’t even remember the last time I did that,’’ said Davis, who had never hit a walkoff homer of any kind in the major leagues. ‘‘It must have been in my dreams, while I was sleeping.’’

It was Detroit’s first game-ending grand slam in almost exactly a decade. Carlos Pena hit one against Arizona on June 27, 2004. Coincidentally, that was the weekend the Tigers honored the 1984 team’s 20th anniversary.

The last one before Pena’s was also 10 years earlier, as Lou Whitaker, a member of the 1984 champs, hit one against Cleveland on June 21, 1994.

Oakland closer Sean Doolittle (2-2) was given a three-run lead to work with in the ninth, but managed only one out.

Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila started the inning with singles. Eugenio Suarez struck out, but Doolittle walked Austin Jackson — just the second walk he has issued this season. Jackson fouled off three straight 2-and-2 pitches before taking a pair of fastballs inside.

Oakland broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning, getting a run-scoring single from Stephen Vogt and a two-run single from Jed Lowrie against Joba Chamberlain.

Nationals 7, Rockies 3 — Adam LaRoche homered, Ryan Zimmerman had three hits, and Ian Desmond added two doubles and three RBIs as host Washington welcomed back Bryce Harper with a win over Colorado.

Harper, who missed 57 games because of a torn ligament in his left thumb, went 1 for 3 with an RBI single — on Bryce Harper bobblehead night.

Jordan Zimmermann (6-4) allowed two runs in six innings as Washington won its third straight.

Justin Morneau had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost 12 of 14.

Orioles 7, Rangers 1 — Steve Pearce hit two of Baltimore’s four home runs off Joe Saunders (0-5) and Ubaldo Jimenez (3-8) ended a run of nine winless starts in a rout of visiting Texas.

Pearce put the Orioles ahead to stay with a two-run drive in the first and connected with a man on in the fourth. It was his first two-homer game during a career that began in 2007.

Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy also homered for the Orioles, who hit a major league-leading 46 long balls in June.

Rays 4, Yankees 3 — Logan Forsythe hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the 12th and Tampa Bay beat host New York after squandering a late lead.

Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier homered for the resurgent Rays, who have their first three-game winning streak since taking a season-best four in a row May 22-25.

Brian Roberts homered off Joel Peralta with one out in the ninth to tie it, 3-3.

Dodgers 1, Indians 0 — Dan Haren pitched one-hit ball over seven innings — a single that was awarded to Michael Bourn after a video review — and rookie Clint Robinson had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh to get host Los Angeles past Cleveland and into first in the NL West.

Mariners 10, Astros 4 — Robinson Cano had a three-run shot in the seventh inning, one of visiting Seattle’s season-high four homers in a rout of Houston.

Heralded prospect Taijuan Walker (1-0) allowed home runs to George Springer and Marwin Gonzalez early before settling down to strike out six in six innings in his season debut after being sidelined by a shoulder problem.

Padres 1, Reds 0 — Jesse Hahn fanned nine in five shutout innings and Everth Cabrera drove in the game’s only run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to lift host San Diego over Cincinnati.

Mat Latos took the loss despite allowing only one hit in seven innings.

Royals 6, Twins 1 — Alcides Escobar tied a career high with four RBIs on two doubles and Salvador Perez homered to lift visiting Kansas City over Minnesota.

Braves 5, Mets 3 — Three errors by New York fueled host Atlanta’s comeback as the Braves scored four runs in the eighth inning to earn their fifth straight win.
