The Browns have snagged a No. 1 wide receiver.
Cleveland agreed to terms on a two-year pact with free agent Dwayne Bowe, a person familiar with the negotiations said Thursday. Bowe, who has spent the past eight seasons with the Chiefs, tweeted “Look forward to spending time with the DAWG POUND in the endzone.”
With Cleveland, Bowe will fill the void created by former Pro Bowler Josh Gordon being suspended for at least the 2015 season for multiple violations of the NFL’s drug policy. Gordon led the league in yards receiving in 2013 and was suspended for 10 games last season. Cleveland’s offense struggled without a deep threat, and even when Gordon returned, the Browns didn’t have much of a passing game.
A big, athletic receiver, Bowe should help. He had 60 receptions for 754 yards last season but did not score a touchdown. The 6-foot-2-inch, 221-pound Bowe led the league with 15 TDs in 2010 and has averaged 66 catches per season. However, Bowe has only scored 13 TDs over the past four seasons.
The Chiefs released the 30-year-old Bowe last week in attempt to clear some salary cap space.
Jaguars claim Pierce
It didn’t take running back Bernard Pierce long to find a job. The Jaguars claimed Pierce off waivers a day after a drunken driving charge led to his release by the Ravens. Pierce, 23, has rushed for 1,334 yards and five touchdowns in 45 career games with the Ravens, including three starts. He was a third-round draft pick in 2012 . . . The Dolphins decided against matching the contract offer to tight end Charles Clay received from Buffalo, so he will join the Bills after signing their $38 million, five-year deal Tuesday. The Dolphins had the right to match after giving Clay a transition tag two weeks ago, but they decided the price was too high, and will go with newcomer Jordan Cameron and holdover Dion Sims at tight end . . . The Falcons signed free agent Jacob Tamme, looking for help at tight end one year after the retirement of Tony Gonzalez. Tamme had 14 catches for 109 and two touchdowns with the Broncos last season. Tamme has 178 catches and 10 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Colts and Broncos . . . Tight end Daniel Fells re-signed with the Giants. The eight-year veteran shared the position with Larry Donnell last season, playing in all 16 games. He had 16 receptions for 188 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.
Still staying put
Defensive tackle Devon Still signed a one-year contract to stay with the Bengals, a few days after getting encouraging news about his 4-year-old daughter’s fight with cancer. The Bengals had offered Still a one-year deal. He waited to see how his daughter, Leah, was doing before making a decision. Results of her tests this week showed her cancer treatments are working. ‘‘Everything really depended upon my daughter’s results,’’ Still said. ‘‘Now that they are going the right way, obviously I am going back to Cincinnati because that’s the team that drafted me and stood by me the whole time.’’ . . . Free agent defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin agreed to a deal with the Seahawks. Rubin has been a full-time starter for most of his seven-year career, all of it spent with the Browns. He started all 59 games he played between 2010-13 and 11 of 13 games last season. He had a career-high 83 tackles and five sacks in 2011. Seattle also signed defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith, who was with the Seahawks in training camp last year before being placed on injured reserve . . . The Redskins re-signed quarterback Colt McCoy, who started four games for the team last season. McCoy, 28, appeared in five games overall in his first season with the Redskins, completing 91 of 128 passes (71.7 percent) for 1,057 yards, with four touchdown passes, three interceptions. Coach Jay Gruden said last month Robert Griffin III would enter the season as the starter . . . Also signing free agent deals were offensive linemen James Brewer (Jets), Byron Stingly (Titans), and Demarco Cox (Colts), as well as running backs DuJuan Harris (Vikings) and Ray Agnew (Cowboys).
