The morning after playing in 100 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps and serving as the team’s signal-caller, Kyle Van Noy signed a two-year contract extension through 2019 that really is a three-year, $12.87 million deal with $5.5 million guaranteed.
Van Noy has emerged as a key player for the Patriots, replacing Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins in the middle of the defense. Hightower now primarily plays outside linebacker, while Collins was traded to Cleveland last year.
Van Noy, 26, was a second-round pick for the Lions in 2014, and was acquired by the Patriots via trade in the middle of last season. He had 29 tackles, an interception, a sack, and a forced fumble in seven regular-season games last year, and six tackles in last Thursday’s loss to the Chiefs.
Van Noy’s contract includes a $3.5 million signing bonus and a $2 million base salary in 2018 that is fully guaranteed. He was set to make $1.12 million this year in the final year of his rookie contract. The Patriots did not make any changes to his 2017 compensation other than adding the signing bonus, which essentially doubled his salary cap number for the season. Realistically, it’s a two-year, $7.62 million contract for Van Noy, with a third nonguaranteed season at $5.25 million.
Van Noy now has the 20th-highest salary cap number on the roster for 2017. The move leaves the Patriots with $11.49 million in salary cap space for this season.
