ARLINGTON, Texas — The Red Sox made a roster move to bolster their worn-down bullpen on Saturday, recalling righthander William Cuevas from Triple A Pawtucket.
He is expected to join the team in time for Saturday night’s game against the Texas Rangers.
Infielder Deven Marrero was optioned to Pawtucket to open a spot on the roster.
The 25-year-old Cuevas was with the Sox for one day earlier this season. He pitched 2 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay on April 21, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings in a 12-8 loss.
Cuevas has worked as a starter for Pawtucket, going 4-3 with a 3.30 earned run average in 12 games. He was scheduled to start for the Paw Sox on Saturday.
Red Sox relievers have worked 18 1/3 innings in the last four games. Cuevas gives the team a long reliever. Steven Wright starts for the Red Sox on Saturday against A.J. Griffin.
Marrero was recalled on June 18 and appeared in four games, going 1 for 7.
