The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a draft determination Thursday, April 27, 2023, that a proposed machine gun training range at the National Guard base may contaminate the Cape Cod aquifer — an aquifer system beneath the Cape Cod peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts — creating a significant public health hazard. A large brush fire burned for hours on Thursday in the Camp Edwards Wildlife Management Area in Sandwich, according to the Army National Guard.

Multiple fire departments across the Cape are working to control the fire, which began as a controlled burn at Joint Base Cape Cod, the guard said.

Controlled burns are routinely conducted by the guard as part of its habitat management and forest fire mitigation program.

Thursday’s burn was scheduled to burn 133 acres, officials said, but the fire quickly spread to 150 acres. While confined to the base, the National Guard requested firefighters from local Cape communities.

Video broadcast on WBZ-TV showed thick plumes of smoke rising over the Cape.
