On its fourth corner kick of the Boston City League girls’ soccer final, Latin Academy caught O’Bryant off guard.

Junior midfielder Hazel O’Rourke raced to the flag, placed the ball, and quickly restarted play, passing to senior captain midfielder Maggie Klaas. Klaas, from the edge of the 18-yard box, calmly slotted her finish into the top right corner.

Klaas’s 68th-minute goal was the difference, as the Dragons earned their fourth consecutive Boston City League title, defeating O’Bryant, 1-0, Saturday at Madison Park.

“I knew she just needed to put the ball down right away,” said Klaas. “We take advantage when teams aren’t set up and ready.”

Latin Academy (9-3-3) implemented the short corner into their playbook three weeks ago and had already scored on it twice before the final.

After earning back-to-back corners six minutes prior and sending both of them into the box, coach Saddane Green knew O’Bryant (9-5-2) would be expecting another long corner.

“It all depends on how many corners we had in the game,” said Green. “If we had four consecutive corners, then that’s the time we could utilize our short corner kicks.”

Latin Academy, which recorded five shots on goal and five corners, utilized the experience of an all-senior backline to stifle the Tigers. O’Bryant was held to one shot on goal, an attempt from 25 yards out by eighth-grader Rhea Mehra that fell right into the hands of junior goalkeeper Claire Hauck.

With 12 seniors on the Dragons’ roster, Saturday’s victory was the perfect sendoff.

“The thing I’ve been looking forward to all year is the city championship,” said Klaas. “To be able to [win] it four years in a row, especially my senior year, just means everything.”
