BARRINGTON, R.I. — Crews found a missing kayaker’s body on Barrington Town Beach after an hours-long search on Sunday night.
The kayaker has been identified as a 60-year-old man, but officials have not released his name or other details. The family of the man has been notified.
Officials said a search began on Conimicut Point in Warwick, which is where the kayaker had left from, around 5 p.m. after the man’s son could not reach him.
Mike Healey, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, said that the body was located five feet from the shore on Barrington Beach. A helicopter and several rescue boats assisted in the search, where they found a kayak partially submerged about 30 feet offshore at the Barrington Town Beach at 6:43 p.m. Sunday.
One of the victim’s family members had called the kayaker’s phone using a find-your-phone app and first responders were able to coordinate the ping from that call to the exact location where the victim was found, Healey told the Globe.
At 9:29 p.m., Barrington Police found the kayaker, who was confirmed dead. He was wearing a life jacket, but with heavy clothing.
Weather conditions on Sunday were very breezy, with winds reaching around 20 miles per hour that caused choppy water between Conimicut and Rumstick Point in Barrington, Healey said. Water temperatures were in the high-30s and low 40s.
