Sunday in Boston starts off as a nice spring day, especially with the influx of people to the city ahead of Monday’s Boston Marathon. Mostly sunny skies should last through the morning but increasing cloud cover is expected ahead of a quick-moving clipper system approaching from the west. Before the system arrives, temperatures should elevate to around 60 degrees, with winds decreasing a few miles per hour.
A clipper system is a very quick-moving storm, usually coming out of the Great Lakes. It often consists of light precipitation and that will be the case for Sunday afternoon.
Clouds and scattered showers will fill the skies into the evening, keeping Boston damp the night before the marathon. The good news is that this storm moves out fast, which should keep runners dry ahead of the start of the race.

Rain may be steady but should remain light with minor accumulations — another good sign ahead of Monday’s Patriots Day.

Here’s a look at weekend weather near you
Boston Area: Sunday starts off beautifully, with mostly clear skies and lots of sun. Temperatures rebound to around 60 until cooling in the afternoon with increasing clouds midday and the arrival of Sunday afternoon light showers.
Southern New England: Sunday will see a welcomed boost in temps as readings will reach the low 60s for Worcester, Providence, Hartford, and Springfield. Hill towns can expect to reach the upper 50s. Showers arrive early, perhaps even late morning across the west, and may have a little more potency. Rain totals should remain relatively minor and reach between a half an inch and an inch before clearing out Sunday evening.
Cape and Islands: Sunday remains about the same, just swapping with mostly sunny skies. Rain arrives mid-afternoon but quickly exits before midnight.
Northern New England: Scattered showers will loom again on Sunday, but with improved temperatures. Precipitation will stay lighter, but remaining snowmelt may still cause localized flooding near rivers and streams. Showers will last through the evening. Temperatures across the area will rise to the mid-50s.
Red Sox weekend forecast:
If you’re heading out to the games this weekend, you’ll be met with more sunshine for Sunday’s game, which is earlier in the day at 1:35 p.m. A shower or two will be arriving after the 7th inning.
