Firefighters put out a blaze at a well-known inn on Cape Cod after a front desk clerk saw the fire on a security camera Tuesday morning, officials said.
Crews went to Dan’l Webster Inn & Spa on Main Street in Sandwich shortly before 1 a.m., officials said. The clerk who saw the fire pulled the fire alarm box for the building and called 911, officials said.
The first engine arrived within two minutes and firefighters found flames in the back of the building outside the kitchen area, officials said.
The fire was under control by 1:25 a.m. Occupants of the inn were moved to other parts of the building once the fire was extinguished, officials said.
One occupant who was suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, officials said.
“Extensive overhaul and clean-up was required to remove the smoke from the building,” officials said in the statement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to historical records, the current inn was built in the early 1970s after the original inn, which was 282 years old, was destroyed by fire.
