Database: How much does your state lawmaker earn?

In the Massachusetts Legislature, practically everyone is a leader. Just look at their paychecks.

On Beacon Hill, state lawmakers earn extra pay for roles as influential as Senate president and as modest as committee vice chair, in some cases doubling their salaries thanks to the generous bonus payments. That leadership pay has become the rule, not the exception: Last year, every state senator and the vast majority of state representatives earned some extra pay for a leadership role.

Lawmakers have broad control over their own compensation; the Legislature writes its own compensation into law, and party leaders decide which of their members should receive the most generous stipends. But it’s not easy for the general public to see how much their state lawmakers earn, because publicly available data doesn’t distinguish between lawmakers’ base salary, travel stipends, and leadership pay.

Using data from the state treasurer, the Globe has compiled a database showing how much each state lawmaker earned in 2023. Look up your lawmaker by name or by town below.
