Cambridge-born actress Mindy Kaling gave a shout out to Massachusetts, the Red Sox, Dunkin Donuts, and native son Ben Affleck Wednesday on night three of the Democratic National Convention.
“I love you Massachusetts! Everybody’s always hating on us, but they just don’t get it,” Kaling, who appeared as a celebrity host, said. “Go Sox! Go Jayson Tatum! Ben Affleck, hang in there!”
“Dunkin Donuts is the best coffee in the world,” Kaling, told the Chicago crowd.
The 45-year-old comedian and screenwriter who starred in and wrote for the acclaimed NBC sitcom, “The Office,” said she couldn’t leave “without giving a shout-out to the amazing delegation from my home state, Massachusetts.”
Kaling, whose parents are from India, said she first met Vice President Kamala Harris when she was a US senator for California and the two women recorded a cooking video together.
“I am an incredibly famous Gen Z actress who you might recognize from The Office, The Mindy Project, or as the woman who courageously outed Kamala Harris as Indian in an Instagram cooking video,” Kaling said.
Kaling, a graduate of Dartmouth College and an Emmy-nominated writer, said they bonded over their love of their scientific-minded Indian mothers and their devotion to serving humanity.
“We immediately hit it off,” Kaling said. “We talked about the love that we have for our moms, who had both passed away from cancer. Both of our mothers were immigrants from India who came to America and committed their lives to serving others.”
