A 9-year-old boy from Brockton who died suddenly on Tuesday is being remembered for his bright smile, big heart, and love of football.

Davien Taylor Roberts, a fourth-grader who played youth football, died after suffering an asthma attack, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up by his aunt, Krista Roberts.

Roberts loved football and was enrolled at the Mary E. Baker Elementary School, she said.

“He also enjoyed playing with all his close cousins and family,” Roberts wrote. “Davien was a kind soul who had the perfect smile and the biggest heart. He was respectful and loved by all who knew him.”

The boy’s grandmother, Crystal Cromwell, said she was with him when he died. He was suffering an asthma attack and she was trying to get him to the hospital.

“He made it to the elevator and collapsed,” she said. “He died in my arms.”

Cromwell said her grandson had battled asthma all this life and took medication and used a nebulizer to keep it under control. “I used to call him my little bubble boy,” she said.

But he didn’t let it stop him from pursuing his love of football. Cromwell said he loved the sport and was adored at his school.

“He had a bright future,” Cromwell said. “He was very smart. He was loved.”

On Wednesday, a moment of silence was held at the Brockton School Committee meeting after Interim Superintendent Priya Tahiliani announced the news of his death.

“I am profoundly saddened to inform you of the passing of one of our students, Davien Taylor, a rising fourth grader at the Baker who passed following a medical emergency early this morning,” Tahiliani said. “He was known for his vivacious spirit and his ever-present smile. Principal (Jane) Werb said, ‘The light he brought to our halls will be sorely missed.’”

The Brockton Raiders youth football organization posted a tribute to Davien on social media. Some local youth football and cheering programs, including Chelmsford and King Philip have contributed to the Go Fund Me campaign to pay for his funeral.

“Davien was not only a talented young athlete but also a bright spirit who brought joy and energy to every practice and game especially with his always present big smile,” the Brockton Raiders post said. “During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Davien’s family and loved ones. The entire Brockton community mourns the loss of such a vibrant young life, and we will be here to support each other through this time of grief.”
