PROVIDENCE — Rhode Islanders headed to the polls on Tuesday to vote in primary elections, and the night belonged to incumbents.

On the Rhode Island Report podcast, Globe reporter Steph Machado and Jim Hummel, host of “A Lively Experiment” on Rhode Island PBS, broke down the results.

They analyzed the convincing victory by Cranston Mayor Kenneth J. Hopkins in the Republican primary against state Representative Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung.

They talked about the landslide victory by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio, a North Providence Democrat, who beat Lenny Cioe while facing a series of health problems.

They looked ahead to the Nov. 5 general election, when voters will be asked whether they want Rhode Island to hold a constitutional convention.

And they even commented on a certain Westerly property owner’s presidential endorsement.
