Waltham-based Markforged has agreed to be acquired by Nano Dimension, an Israeli 3-D printing company with US headquarters in Waltham. It’s the second time this year that Nano Dimension has purchased a local 3-D printing company; in July it agreed to pay $183 million for Markforged rival Desktop Metal of Burlington.

Both Markforged and Desktop Metal make machines that can print complex mechanical components using metal powders. The technology enables rapid low-cost prototyping of machine parts, and is increasingly used in the production of finished products.

Markforged posted a $103.5 million loss in 2023 on revenues of $93.7 million, well short of analysts expectations of $117 million in revenue. But in its announcement of the Markforged deal, Nano Dimension said that Nano Dimension, Desktop Metal, and Markforged “would have a combined revenue based on fiscal year 2023 of $340 million, along with a clear path to profitability.”
