Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who played one season in New England in 2020, will join Stephen A. Smith as a commentator on ESPN’s “First Take” this fall.

Newton will make his debut on Friday during a live broadcast from Tennessee State University as part of the show’s HBCU roadshow.

“Cam Newton’s addition to first take brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities,” ESPN executive vice president David Roberts said in a release. “His dynamic charisma, combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.”

Newton, 35, was the first overall pick in the 2011 draft and the 2015 NFL MVP with Carolina. He spent 10 seasons with the Panthers, from 2011-2019 and 2021, and one with the Patriots in 2020. New England went 7-8 with Newton as the starter, and he threw for 2,657 yards and eight touchdowns that season.

The Patriots cut him in August 2021, favoring then-rookie Mac Jones, and Newton later rejoined the Panthers for a final season.

Newton now hosts two podcasts, “4th and 1″ and “Funky Friday.”

“I’ve always brought passion and energy into everything I do, and that won’t change at ESPN,” Newton said in the release. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my perspective and go toe-to-toe with the best in the business. Fans can expect the same intensity I brought to the field, along with real talk, bold takes, and good fun.”

“First Take” airs weekdays at 10 a.m. on ESPN.
