Parades, wreath laying ceremonies, and public speaking programs are among the events planned for the holiday weekend to honor men and women who have served in the military.
Acton
At Acton Town Common, a Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. near the Isaac Davis Monument. The event will begin with moment of silence and an invocation followed by remarks from Senator Jamie Eldridge and Retired Colonel Robert Beaudoin. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths.
Boston
The “Salute to Service” parade will be held Saturday at noon. The parade will start at the Boston Public Library at Copley Square, travel up Boylston Street, and turn onto Tremont Street before ending on City Hall Plaza. A ceremony and flag raising will be held there. Over 700 participants, including students from local high school ROTCs, officers from the USS Constitution and the US Coast Guard Sector Boston, and the West Point Marching Band, will take part. The Gold Star families of fallen soldiers, who have been given a square or intersection dedicated to their service, have been invited.
Disabled American Veterans 5k
There will be a 5k run, walk, or roll on Saturday at Castle Island’s Fort Independence to raise awareness of the challenges veterans face everyday. The race, which starts at 10 a.m., will also be followed by a “post-feast.” Donations to the Disabled American Veterans organization will help provide services to ill or injured veterans.
State House Ceremony
Gov. Maura Healey will host a program on Monday 11 a.m. in the Great Hall of Flags. The program will include a military POW/MIA remembrance candle lighting and taps, a performance by the Lynn ROTC, the presentation of the Captain Thomas Hudner Jr. Valor Award and the Captain Thomas Kelley Community Engagement Award, and a musical salute by the 215 Army Quintet.
Cambridge
The city’s observance will be on Monday, 11 a.m. at Cambridge Common, with Retired Justice Shannon Frison as the keynote speaker. A free luncheon and informational gathering will take place from noon to 3 p.m. in the Liberty Revolution Ballroom at the Sheraton Commander Hotel (16 Garden Street).
Chelsea
A ceremony on Monday will feature several speakers, including Army veteran and CEO of Embrace Boston, Imari Paris Jeffries, who will serve as the keynote speaker at the event. The event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at Clark Avenue School (8 Clark Ave.)
Halifax
The annual celebration will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Town Hall at 499 Plymouth St. The unveiling of 70 brand new Hometown Hero banners on the Town Green, which will be hung up throughout town, will also take place.
Lexington
A car parade will begin on Monday at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum parking lot (33 Marrett Road) and end at St. Brigid’s Church (2001 Massachusetts Ave.). Cars will “roll out” at 11 a.m. for the celebration and ride along Massachusetts Avenue, with a left at the Minute Man statue during the route across Lexington.
Malden
A ceremony honoring veterans will be held at the World War I Monument at Devir Park (corner of Malden Street and the Fellsway) at 10 a.m. on Monday. A life-size bronze statue of a World War I soldier will also be unveiled at the monument, which contains the names of almost 3,000 Malden men and women who served during the war.
Quincy
A parade of veterans will march to Mount Wollaston Cemetery on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for a ceremony which will unveil a monument dedicated to those whose served in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan. A ceremony at 10 a.m. will include multiple speakers, including retired generals. At 10:30 a.m. on Monday, the city’s annual Veterans Day parade will begin at Quincy High School’s Russell Park parking lot, travel up Russell Park to Hancock Street, then pause at the corner of Hancock Street and Furnace Brook Parkway for a Wreath Laying at the Doughboy Statue honoring World War I veterans. Shortly after, the parade will move to the World War II Memorial at Merrymount Park at 11:30 a.m. for a closing ceremony.
Worcester
A pancake breakfast kicks off the festivities on Monday at 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Inc. (69 Grove St.) followed by a parade at 11 a.m. beginning at Glennie Street and Grove Street and ending on Salisbury Street. A wreath laying ceremony at 12:15 p.m. will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Green Hill Park (301 Green Hill Parkway) and a second ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Korean War Memorial (52 Foster St.).
Springfield
The city’s annual parade will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. and end with a wreath laying ceremony. The parade will begin at Springfield Technical Community College and proceed down State Street to City Hall, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans’ Monument.
