The Sumner Tunnel reopened Tuesday morning after a large truck was forced to back out of the tunnel.

As of 6:15 a.m., the tractor-trailer had finished backing up and the tunnel was reopened, according to Jacquelyn Goddard, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

“Delays will ease,” Goddard wrote on X.

Boston police had previously issued a traffic advisory, announcing that the Sumner Tunnel was closed to traffic.

“If you are in East Boston trying to travel downtown, please use an alternate route,” police wrote on X.

NBC10 Boston posted photos taken by Mark Garfinkel that showed a truck apparently trying to reverse course in the tunnel.

“Traffic was backed up early Tuesday morning in Boston’s Sumner Tunnel as a big rig truck appeared to be attempting to reverse through the tunnel,” NBC10 Boston wrote on X.

This is a developing news story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
