A Wareham woman was rescued from the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

At around 12:43 p.m., officers responded to the canal for a report of a woman in the canal, Bourne police said on Facebook.

Upon arrival, officers found a 31-year-old woman who was struggling in the water and unable to make it to shore on her own, Bourne police said.

Rescue attempts were difficult due to the tide and the woman’s distance from the shore, police said.

With assistance from Bourne fire, State Police, US Army Corps, the town’s harbormaster, US Coast Guard, and Wareham first responders, the woman was pulled from the water and transported to an area hospital, police said.

The condition of the woman was not available.

At this time, it does not appear that the woman entered the water by accident, Bourne Police Chief Brandon Esip said. The incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter.
