Passengers on the Mattapan Line trolley had to be rescued by Milton firefighters Tuesday after the flooding from the Neponset River submerged the tracks at the Milton MBTA station, officials said.

The tracks were flooded around 7:40 a.m. and shuttle buses were deployed until about 1:25 p.m. when regular service between Mattapan and Ashmont resumed, according to the MBTA.

A trolley at the Milton station experienced a power outage, stranding six passengers and the driver on board, the MBTA said.

When crews arrived shortly before 8 a.m., they found the trolley stuck in four to five feet of water, said Milton Deputy Fire Chief Stephen King.

The people were rescued without injury, the MBTA said.

“Power was safely cut, and the Milton Fire Department and MBTA personnel assisted all occupants in exiting the vehicle,” officials said.

The passengers and driver were pulled out of the trolley two at a time and placed onto inflatable rafts, King said.

The MBTA released video from the station’s security cameras showing firefighters in cold-water rescue suits escorting passengers onto the rafts.

The flooding was caused by an overflow of upstream water, King said.
