Uber and Lyft fees for rides to and from Logan International Airport will increase this summer under the terms of a tentative agreement between the Massachusetts Port Authority and the ride-hail companies.
The proposed $2.25 increase to ride-hail airport fees will be voted on at Thursday’s Massport board meeting, according to statements issued Wednesday by Massport, Uber, and Lyft.
Massport now charges ride-hail companies $3.25 for airport pickups and drop-offs, which Uber and Lyft pass onto customers via fares.
Under the terms of the tentative agreement, those fees would increase July 1 to $5.50 each way.
For shared rides, the fee would be $1.50 per trip.
The revenue raised will be used to fund capital improvements at the airport, the statements said.
Under the agreement, Uber and Lyft will also expand access to shared-ride services at Logan to help ease congestion. And Massport will pilot expanded curbside access for ride-hail users.
“Massport’s new agreement with [Uber and Lyft] improves the rider experience, establishes new, cheaper ways to get to Boston Logan and helps mitigate traffic around the airport and our surrounding neighborhoods,” Massport chief executive Rich Davey said in a statement.
“As Boston Logan continues to grow, we expect even more travelers to use Ride Apps,” Davey’s statement continued. “We need to improve the infrastructure to support them, as well as our other ground transportation services so we are able to move more passengers with the least impact.”
Lyft officials expressed trepidation about charging customers more.
“Lyft appreciates the productive conversations we’ve been able to have with Massport,” Brendan Joyce, Lyft’s public policy manager, said in a statement. “While we still have concerns about increasing fees on riders, this is a step in the right direction. It allows us to improve the rider experience at Logan as we continue to look for ways to equitably fund the airport’s future success.”
Uber officials said in a statement that they were pleased with “this compromise” that will “get passengers to and from Logan Airport more efficiently, while at the same time reducing congestion in the area.”
“We will continue to work with Massport to get travelers as close to the curb as possible and will always advocate for the best service for riders and the best platform for drivers,” Josh Gold, Uber’s senior director of public policy and communications said in his statement.
Other aspects of the agreement include:
● Uber and Lyft will develop a last-mile program to incentivize use of the Logan Express.
● Uber, Lyft, and Massport will jointly launch an urban shuttle service at the airport, providing riders with an affordable curbside shuttle option to further reduce single-occupancy trips.
The agreement also seeks to reduce “deadheading,” which is when a driver drops someone at the airport and leaves without a new passenger.
