Two people were hurt during “an electrical flash incident” while working in a manhole Tuesday in the parking lot of Belmont High School, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the school parking lot shortly after 9:45 a.m. for a report of “electrical workers injured,” the town’s fire department said in a statement.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found two injured electrical workers that had been working in a manhole when an accident occurred,” the statement said.

The utility Belmont Light described the accident as an electrical flash.

“This morning two Belmont Light line workers were involved in an electrical flash incident while working inside a manhole near Belmont High School,” the utility said in a statement. “The line workers were wearing appropriate protective equipment and were able to exit the manhole under their own power. Both line workers were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where they are in stable condition and are being treated for their injuries.”

Utility officials said their “thoughts are with the two line workers as we hope for their speedy recovery from today’s incident. We thank the Belmont Fire, Police, and paramedics for their quick response. Belmont Light is working to determine the cause of the incident and will release more information when available.”

The utility didn’t name the injured workers.

Isaac Taylor, principal of Belmont High, said the incident caused a power outage at the high school and middle school. But classes continue thanks to a generator pumping in power.

“All staff and students are safe and not impacted by the accident,” Taylor said. “We are operating on generator power and plan to continue school for the day. Hot lunches will be served as usual.”

Wi-Fi also remains available, and while lighting is limited, all classrooms have windows, Taylor said.

This breaking news story will be updated when more information is released.
