Three people were rescued after their boat capsized near Bird Island off Marion Wednesday afternoon, the South Coast town’s police and fire said.

Marion’s emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that three individuals fell in the water after their boat overturned at 12:46 p.m., Marion police and fire said in a statement.

The harbormaster’s office dispatched a patrol boat. The three people, who ere wearing life vests, were taken aboard.

They were taken to the Marion town dock, where they were evaluated by Marion fire and EMS. Two of the people were then taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the statement said.

“The air temperature was in the low 70s at the time of the incident, and the water temperature was 65.3 degrees at the time of the rescue,” the statement said.

The Mattapoisett Harbormaster Department helped recover the three people’s belongings from the water, the statement said.

Marion Police Chief Richard Nighelli thanked the harbormaster’s staff for a job well done.

“If not for fast-acting rescue personnel, this situation could have easily turned tragic,” Nighelli said. “Even as we approach the summer season, hypothermia is a very real potential danger whenever someone falls from a craft into coastal waters.”

The incident is under review.
