Updated 3:15 p.m. — Multiple flash flood warnings are in place across parts of Western Mass. and Connecticut, specifically along I-91 and into the city limits of Hartford.
Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour may lead to isolated totals of 4 inches as slow-moving storms dump heavy rain, leading to flooded roadways and other low-lying areas.
These flash flood warnings are in place for the next couple of hours as storms crawl towards Boston. Boston may see some rain, but the intensity should minimize as storms reach the area.
The bulk of last week featured below-average temperatures and above-average rainfall, along with humidity. This week we’re going to go back to above average temperatures, still with the risk of a few showers and a thunderstorm, but likely drier overall and certainly more humid than average conditions.
So far, July is running about 2 degrees above average in Boston, and we’ll likely stay on an above-average trajectory for the rest of the month. Although there may be a short break in the heat coming this weekend.
We’ve seen some morning cloudiness the past couple of days, and for our Monday, any patchy fog in early morning clouds gives way to partly sunny skies. Some areas could hang on to the clouds even longer, so be prepared for less sunshine in spots.
Temperatures will be in the upper 70s to mid-80s from the coast to the inland areas, with winds very light, flipping around to the south and keeping temperatures coolest for the Cape and islands and the south coast of Cape Ann.
A frontal system on Monday night brings the chance for a few showers. These may tend to fall apart as they reach the coastline. So those of you from Route 128 and westward see the best chance of a tenth to a quarter of an inch of precipitation with a few isolated heavier downpours.
On Tuesday, it remains partly sunny with a very limited chance of a leftover shower or storm.
Wednesday features lots of sunshine and it is a hot day with temperatures between 88 and 95 in the afternoon. With the humidity, it’s going to feel near the century mark or even a little higher.
We likely see heat advisories issued this week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The next frontal system brings a chance for showers and thunderstorms later Friday afternoon and night. This will usher in somewhat more seasonable humidity and temperatures with readings over the weekend in the low- to mid-80s, along with a blend of clouds and sunshine.
Since it’s early in the week, the timing of this run can still change. So keep abreast of the latest forecast if you’re making plans.
Monday breakdown
Greater Boston: Look for plenty of sunshine to start the work week, there may be a pop-up thunderstorm in the evening after temperatures reach the low to mid-80s. Look for warmer and more humid conditions on Tuesday.
Central and Western Massachusetts: Clouds will give way to a blend of clouds and sunshine with a small chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm on Monday. Highs will be in the lower to mid 80s. There will be partly sunny skies with temperatures 85 to 90 on Tuesday and a slight chance of a thunderstorm.
Southeastern Massachusetts: Look for clearing skies to develop during Monday and the temperature approaching 80. There could be a couple of showers or storms Monday night. Tuesday is more humid with temperatures in the mid-80s and a blend of clouds and sunshine.
Cape Cod and the islands: Look for mostly cloudy skies early with clearing skies developing on Monday and temperatures near 80. There could be a morning shower on Tuesday, otherwise warm and humid with temperatures 80 to 85
Rhode Island: Look for temperatures approaching 80 across the South Coast Monday afternoon and in the low to mid 80s north of Providence. There might be a thunderstorm overnight and early Tuesday, with a similar temperature pattern at the coast and warmer inland.
New Hampshire: There could be a shower the first half of Monday with a lot of clouds there after and plenty of humidity with temperatures in the mid-80s. Mostly sunny and hot conditions will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures near or above 90 degrees.
