A popular seafood restaurant in Marshfield was heavily damaged by a three-alarm fire early Friday morning, according to fire officials.

291 Ocean Street, the eatery named for its address in the Brant Rock section of town, suffered an “extensive loss,” but a damage estimate is not yet known, Marshfield Fire Chief Michael S. LaSelva said in a press release.

Just before 5 a.m., firefighters received a call from a central alarm company for a system activation at 291 Ocean St., the location of therestaurant overlooking Cape Cod Bay,

At the same time, two passersby called 911 to report an active fire coming from the restaurant, according to LaSelva.

When firefighters arrived , they found a “heavy fire” with flames pouring out of one side of the building, LaSelva said.

“Crews had to extensively overhaul many areas including the second-floor deck to access the fire and extinguish it,” LaSelva said. The fire extended into “void spaces” throughout the side of the restaurant, according to LaSelva.

Over two hours later, around 7:30 a.m., the fire “was brought under control and extinguished,” according to LaSelva.

The building was vacant at the time, and there were no reported injuries, according to the press release.

The restaurant, owned by generations of the Haddad family, is usually open 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., according t its website.

Previously named Haddad’s Ocean Cafe, the restaurant was renovated and renamed 291 Ocean Street in December 2012, the website said.

TripAdvisor ranked it the third-best restaurant in Marshfield.

The restaurant owners could not be immediately reached for comment Friday evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state’s fire marshal’s office, according to LaSelva.
