According to major league sources, Red Sox field coordinator Andrew Wright is leaving the team to join the front office of the Nationals. Wright had been with the Sox since being hired away from the Yankees after the 2022 season.

As the Red Sox’ field coordinator, Wright had played a significant role implementing changes to the way the franchise instructed its minor leaguers, particularly defense and base running.

The Red Sox already has elevated Pablo Cabrera — a defensive instructor at the team’s Fort Myers, Fla., complex for the last two years — to the role of a minor league defensive coordinator in recent weeks, with plans to have him work alongside Wright. Now, the Sox are likely to hire a field coordinator with significant responsibility for defense and base running, but the exact dimensions of the position remain uncertain.

Wright was hired by new Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni, who’d spent the last 10 years with the Red Sox, most recently as the assistant general manager in charge of development. Toboni already had hired former Red Sox director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson as an assistant GM.
