Three Maine residents killed in boating incident on Florida river

Three Maine residents died following a boating incident on a river Saturday near Cape Coral, Fl., officials said.

Brenna Millett, 49, Craig Millett, 56, and Rebecca Knight, 48, of Cape Coral, died following the incident on the Caloosahatchee River near the Cape Coral Yacht Club, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement.

The Milletts and Knight live part-time between Cape Coral and Maine, a spokesperson for the commission confirmed Monday.

The 39-foot boat was on the river “when an incident occurred” at about 5 p.m., the commission said. The main part of the river spans 38 miles to its mouth , according to the tourism website for Fort Myers, Fl., which is near Cape Coral.

Brenna Millett and Knight were taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the statement.

Neal Kirby, of Cape Coral, was also on the boat and taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, according to another Sunday statement from the commission. It wasn’t immediately clear Monday evening if Kirby was also a Maine resident.

Craig Millett was found dead by members of a dive team at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday following an overnight search that continued Sunday morning, officials said.

“We understand that there are still many questions surrounding how this incident occurred,” the statement read. “At this time, it is still early in the process, and our investigators are working diligently to gather information.”

The Coast Guard, Cape Coral police, the Cape Coral Fire Department, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and Lee County EMS went to the scene. FWS is leading the investigation, according to the statements.

No further information was immediately available Monday evening.
