The Boston Legacy announced Wednesday the signing of Sophia Lowenberg, a Connecticut native who played four years as a midfielder and defender at Boston College.
Lowenberg’s two-year contract with the Legacy includes a club option to renew for one year.
“I’m excited that it’s a new team so that I can really feel part of the whole entire journey,” Lowenberg said in a release. “Along with just remaining in Boston — I’m from Connecticut, which is down the road — and then also going to Boston College, continuing to play in Boston will be a great experience.”
A native of Trumbull, Conn., Lowenberg was a consistent starter for the Eagles, logging seven goals and two assists in 67 career games.
“Sophia is a player with real potential, and we’re looking forward to supporting her growth as she takes this next step,” Legacy general manager Domè Guasch said in the release. “She brings the character, ambition, and work ethic we value in our environment. As a New Englander and an upcoming Boston College alum, she already understands this community, and we’re excited to have her continue her journey in Boston as part of Boston Legacy FC.”
Lowenberg is the Legacy’s first signee from a local university and Boston’s 10th signing overall.
The NWSL requires a minimum of 22 and a maximum of 26 players per team, and while Boston is not required to meet that minimum by the end of 2025 as an expansion team, the Legacy will be subject to league-standard roster compliance dates in 2026. Those dates have not yet been announced.
The Legacy will open their inaugural home campaign on Saturday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m., at Gillette Stadium. Boston’s opponent has yet to be announced.
In 2026, the NWSL will expand to a 30-game schedule from 26 games in 2025 with the addition of two teams, Boston and the Denver Summit. The season will last 27 weeks, with a planned break from June 1-28 to account for the men’s World Cup taking place in a number of NWSL cities, which will tie up stadium access.
