The family of a 3-year-old who died Sunday after being hit by a car in Sandwich said she will be remembered for her “infectious laughter” and “faith-filled spirit.”

In an online tribute, the family of Riley Zena Marie Cochrane recalled her as a joyful and loving child who brought happiness to those around her.

“Riley brought her family an abundance of love from the moment she entered the world, which only grew stronger as time went on,” her family wrote.

She was hit by a vehicle on Service Road in the area between Quaker Meeting House and Chase Roads shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to authorities. The family lived in Sandwich.

Emergency responders found the injured child and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators, officials said.

Authorities have not provided further details.

Riley was born to Patricia DePina on July 16, 2022, and was the adopted daughter of Edward Cochrane, a State Police sergeant, and his wife, Lisa, according to the family’s tribute.

The State Police Association of Massachusettsextended its condolences to the family.

“No words can ease the profound grief that accompanies the loss of a child, but the outpouring of compassion from across our ranks speaks to the strength and unity of our law enforcement family,” the union said.

The child’s death has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from local residents and the law enforcement community. An online fundraiser to help support the family had received nearly $120,000 in donations as of Friday afternoon.

Born July 16, 2022, Riley was adopted when she was two weeks old and quickly became a cherished member of the Cochrane family. She had five older siblings and three biological siblings.

“Riley was the perfect, most pure representation of what it means to be a Cochrane — always dancing, singing, unconditionally loving with a faith-filled spirit, noticing the beauty in every little thing she saw,” the tribute read.

She enjoyed princesses, dancing, music, and simple everyday moments — from collecting shells at the beach for her father to playing with their family dog, Piper, the tribute said.

Her “infectious laughter” and faith-filled spirit were defining aspects of her young life, the tribute said. “Riley lived a beautiful life where she knew only pure love and gentleness,” the family wrote.

The tribute noted the family’s gratitude for the support they have received from friends, church members and the broader community.

Visiting hours and funeral services are scheduled for Dec. 15 and 16.
