A fire broke out Friday on a Massachusetts Maritime Academy training ship off the coast of Puerto Rico, the school said.
No injuries were reported in the blaze on board the TS Patriot State, which was on its way to the Panama Canal as part of the school’s annual term at sea.
In a statement on the college’s website, Mass. Maritime said the fire started in the ship’s incinerator.
“The fire was successfully extinguished using a combination of the fixed water mist system and two portable dry chemical extinguishers,” officials said.
No injuries were reported. The ship was not evacuated, officials said.
“Crew and cadets responded using proper training and established safety protocols to manage the situation promptly and effectively,” officials at the Bourne-based school said.
The school said its “emphasis on safety and emergency-response training prepares cadets to work closely with the professional crew, and that training contributed to the immediate and effective management of today’s incident.”
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The fire will not stop the trip, the school said.
“Sea Term will continue as planned,” the school said. The ship left Buzzards Bay on Jan. 10, officials said.
The ship is traveling to the Panama Canal where the students will then sail into the Pacific Ocean and cross the equator, officials said.
The TS Patriot State is two years old. More than 500 feet long, it can house up to 600 cadets and 160 faculty and professional crew members, according to the school.
