Communities across New England and beyond have experienced major shifts in the past decade or so — in their makeup, economies, and daily lives. Now, we can see just how much.
The US Census Bureau tries to capture the various aspects of our communities and the people who live in them through its American Community Survey program. Newly released survey data show what life was like from 2020 to 2024 — the first such data to fully capture the years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What does “five-year estimates” mean, though? It means that the data points you see here are averages over five years, rather than any single year. So it’s meant to be interpreted as generally what things looked like in that timeframe, rather than a snapshot in time.

Correction: Due to a data engineering error, an earlier version of this tool incorrectly reported median household income figures for 2024 and 2019. The Globe regrets the error.
