SCORE: Yankees 4, Red Sox 0.
RECORD: 6-5.
BREAKDOWN: Garrett Crochet had an only-in-spring-training tuneup, getting pulled with two outs in the third inning and then returning for one batter at the start of the fourth in order to build stamina. After Yankees top prospect George Lombard jumped on a 97-mile-per-hour fastball for a home run leading off the game, Crochet recorded eight straight outs before giving up another hit to Lombard with two outs in the third. Crochet’s 2⅔-inning, 53-pitch, three-hit, three-run outing with no walks and three strikeouts represented an unremarkable exercise in volume building.
“Spring training for him is all about that. He’s getting repetitions, getting the volume up,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of his Opening Day starter. “He’ll be ready for Cincinnati.”
Crochet served as the warm-up act for Payton Tolle, who delivered a fire-breathing outing of three shutout innings in which he struck out seven while topping out at 100.4 m.p.h.
NEXT: Lefthander T.J. Sikkema will start for the Red Sox against the Phillies in Clearwater at 1:05 p.m., a game that will be carried on WEEI-AM 850.
