RED SOX SPRING TRAINING REPORT

Thursday’s Red Sox spring training report: Connor Wong lone projected big leaguer in lineup for loss to Phillies

When Red Sox manager Alex Cora surveyed the field in Clearwater, Fla., on Thursday, he saw only one player in the lineup who is projected to be on the roster for Opening Day.Barry Chin/Globe Staff

SCORE: Phillies 6, Red Sox 2

RECORD: 6-6

BREAKDOWN: The Red Sox’ lineup in Clearwater, Fla., featured one player projected to make the Opening Day roster: backup catcher Connor Wong, who was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter. The combination of the World Baseball Classic and a faraway road game meant no other regulars were available to or asked to play. “This is what we have,” manager Alex Cora said. Both Sox runs came across when Phillies shortstop Bryan Rincon and left fielder Keaton Anthony dropped Yoeilin Cespedes’s popup in medium-depth left field; Cespedes came all the way around to score behind Mickey Gasper. Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo struck out five in three scoreless innings.

NEXT: After staying overnight in the Tampa area, the Red Sox will visit the Tigers in Lakeland, Fla., on Friday. Lefthander Connelly Early will start opposite righty Justin Verlander, who will be making his first Grapefruit League appearance since returning to the Tigers last month. The game will not be televised.
