Two men from Lynn will serve at least nine years in state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for a shooting behind a Lynn high school in 2022, prosecutors said Thursday.
Alan Bernadin and Nathaniel Mercedat, both age 23 of Lynn, were charged in the death of of Brian Gomez, 20, of Salem, on April 10, 2022, prosecutors said.
The two Lynn men appeared in Salem Superior Court in Salem for a change of plea hearing, court records show.
Gomez’s family said he was a “vibrant young man, son, brother, and friend,” according to Tucker’s statement.
Gomez was getting ready to perform for artists and repertoire executives in New York City before he died, his family said.
Mercedat also pleaded guilty to three other charges after he stomped on a fellow inmate’s head in the Middleton House of Correction, prosecutors said. Those charges are assault and battery with a deadly weapon, assault and battery and disturbing a correctional institution, according to the statement.
Both men were sentenced to no less than nine years and no more than 10 years in state prison for manslaughter, with Mercedat racking up another 90 days for the three other charges, prosecutors said.
Attorneys for Mercedat and Bernadin did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
Gomez died after a shooting behind Lynn English High School, when “Bernadin and Mercedat fired the shots that killed Gomez at a meetup party shortly after midnight,” prosecutors said.
Testing showed that the four bullets that hit him were fired from two different guns, prosecutors said.
