“I seek to retire from naval service.”
That was a statement Michelle Bloomrose didn’t think she would have to confront for years. Nearly two decades into her Navy career, she had finally reached her lifelong goal: the rank of captain. Having been confirmed by the US Senate for the promotion, the next few years seemed bright.
Then came the transgender service ban.
Days into his second term, President Trump signed an executive order banning troops with gender dysphoria from military service — a number the Pentagon estimated to be about 4,200 in December 2024.
One year later, many troops are still in limbo, awaiting discharge. SPARTA Pride, a transgender military advocacy organization, estimates that hundreds have already been separated.
The Globe followed three service members with a combined 54 years of military service, as their careers, livelihoods, and military identities are upended by the ban. Watch the documentary above.
