An 18-year-old Haverhill woman has been charged with setting a fire Tuesday that destroyed an abandoned mill in Haverhill, police said.
Isabella Sargent was charged with arson of a structure and conspiracy to commit arson, court records show. Sargent was arraigned Wednesday and her next court date is scheduled for May 26.
She was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and was released with a GPS tracking bracelet, according to court documents.
This isn’t the first time that someone has allegedly set fire to the building. In 2015, four teenagers were charged with arson for burning down part of the structure.
On Tuesday, crews responded to a 911 call shortly before 3 a.m., according to Christopher Cesati, the city’s fire chief. When they arrived, the Stevens Street building was fully engulfed in flames, Cesati said.
Crews worked for hours to bring the three-alarm fire under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures, the fire department said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
The mill sustained substantial damage and will not be rebuilt, city officials said Wednesday. Stevens Street will be closed until the building is demolished and the area is considered safe for public access.
“As a result of this closure, businesses that rely on access via Stevens Street will be impacted and will be unable to utilize this route until further notice,” fire officials said. “The city is actively working to address the situation as quickly and safely as possible and will provide updates as conditions change.”
