DETROIT — Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony was diagnosed with a sprained right wrist on Tuesday, something interim manager Chad Tracy described as “good news” given the alternatives. Anthony was not placed on the injured list.

“We’ll keep assessing over the next couple of days to see how he’s feeling,” Tracy said before the Sox beat the Tigers, 10-3.

Anthony was injured in the first inning of Monday night’s 5-4 victory against the Tigers on a check-swing foul ball. He left the game in the second inning and flew back to Boston on Tuesday morning to be examined by Dr. Matthew Leibman, the team’s hand specialist.

Anthony will not rejoin the team until Thursday’s home game against Tampa Bay. The Sox will play a man short until then. There remains a possibility Anthony lands on the IL if he does not improve in the coming days.

“We don’t see a break; we don’t see anything structural right now,” Tracy said. “But there are still steps to take to make sure that he feels good and healthy.”

Anthony has hit .229 with a .675 OPS, one home run, and five RBIs this season.

Jarren Duran was in the lineup in left field, but his struggles continued as he went 0 for 5 out of the leadoff spot with three strikeouts.

Gray back in the fold

Tracy said after the game that starter Sonny Gray will come off the injured list to face the Tigers on Wednesday night. Gray has been out since April 21 with a strained right hamstring.

Gray is 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in five starts. He declined to comment on Tuesday.

The righthander threw a simulated game at Fenway Park on Friday instead of pitching in a minor league game.

The Sox haven’t decided their rotation for the four-game series against the Rays at Fenway Park that starts on Thursday. It’s likely Connelly Early and Jake Bennett would start the first two games.

Ranger Suarez could return on an extra day of rest of Saturday. The lefthander exited his last start after only four innings because of tightness in his right hamstring, but did not go on the injured list.

“We’re still assessing that over the next couple of days,” Tracy said. “We’ll stay on target with that and make a decision on that later on.”

Welcome, Sox Hall of Famers

New Red Sox Hall of Famers Johnny Damon, Jon Lester, and Mike Timlin will be honored on Thursday during pre-game ceremonies. Longtime public address announcer Sherm Feller, who died in 1994, is also a member of the class.

On Friday, all living players with a retired number will throw out a first pitch to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the team’s first game on May 8, 1901, at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. Wade Boggs, Carlton Fisk, Pedro Martínez, David Ortiz, Jim Rice, and Carl Yastrzemski are confirmed participants.

Arias honored

Double-A Portland shortstop Franklin Arias was named the Eastern League player of the month for April. The 20-year-old from Venezuela hit .375 with a 1.196 OPS over 20 games. He had eight home runs and 20 RBIs. Arias led the league in total bases (55), slugging percentage (.764) and OPS. Seven of his home runs came over nine games from April 14-25. He also had 10 multi-hit games. Arias is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America. He was signed in 2023 … Justin Slaten is set to pitch for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday in what would be his second injury rehab appearance. The righthanded reliever has been out since April 5 with an oblique strain … Garrett Crochet is engaged in what was called a “moderate” throwing program as he works to build up arm strength. He’s eligible to return from the injured list next week.
