Red Sox pitching prospect Juan Valera, who was seeking further opinions on his ailing elbow last week, underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
“Juan Valera underwent successful reconstruction of the right elbow ulnar collateral ligament yesterday,” Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham told the Globe. “The procedure was performed by Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala.”
The 19-year-old was dominant to start the year, striking out 17 (with four walks) in 9⅓ innings while allowing just two runs. His fastball topped out at 101.7 miles per hour in his second start of the season.
A normal rehab schedule would see Valera return to minor league games by late 2027.
