The Roslindale man who drove the wrong way on Route 1 last week causing head-on collision that killed him and State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor was cited for driving the wrong way on a road in Somerville in 2013, records show.
Hernan R. Marrero was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 1 in Lynnfield on Wednesday around 2 a.m. when he crashed his Jeep into Trainor, who was driving a State Police cruiser, authorities said.
Trainor, 30, was a three-year State Police veteran.
Both men died from their injuries, and an investigation into the crash by Essex District Attorney Paul F. Tucker’s office and State Police is ongoing.
Marrero, 50, was cited for wrong-way driving on Mystic Valley Parkway in Somerville in 2013, according to records from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
At the time, he was traveling north in the southbound lanes at 3:10 p.m., according to a handwritten citation released by the RMV. Marrero was driving a gray 2005 Volvo S40, according to the civil citation.
No additional details of the traffic stop were immediately available Monday. Marrero was issued a $20 civil citation, records show.
Separately, Marrero was issued two warnings for speeding in 2022 and 2023 while driving a 2018 Jeep, records show. It was not immediately clear if these incidents involved the same Jeep that Marrero was driving last Wednesday at the time of the crash.
Only limited information of those incidents was available in the RMV documents.
In January 2023, Marrero was stopped for speeding for driving 44 miles an hour, although the citation does not cite the posted speed limit. The warning was issued by one of the law enforcement agencies covered by Wrentham District Court, records show.
In November 2022, Marrero was cited for speeding at a rate of 41 miles an hour, but again the posted speed limit was not included in the record. The police agency involved in the stop was from the Dedham District Court jurisdiction, the records show.
Marrero was stopped by State Police on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Framingham for operating a vehicle with improper equipment in April 2023. The warning does not provide specifics.
Marrero was the father of three children, the oldest of whom is 17. The youngest two children, twins, are 13 years old; Marrero’s death came days before their 14th birthday.
Marrero had lived in the US since at least 2001, holding legal status. He became a naturalized citizen in March 2021, court records show.
