A Massachusetts man is among two suspects charged in federal court with kidnapping and torturing a woman for more than 24 hours after being taken from a New Hampshire home and held in Vermont, US Attorney Erin Creegan said Tuesday.
Damarcus Bonner, 30, and Tyron Harris, 27, have been charged with an interstate kidnapping conspiracy and were slated to appear in federal court Tuesday, Creegan said in a news release.
Both defendants were previously charged at the state level and had been in Vermont custody since January, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors allege that Harris and Bonner kidnapped a woman in Claremont, N.H., and brought her to a residence in Springfield, Vt.
For more than 24 hours, the men allegedly held her there against her will, tortured and beat her, and demanded money from her and others on her behalf, prosecutors said.
Police in Springfield learned of the kidnapping and went to the residence in the early morning hours of January 25, prosecutors said.
Officers freed the woman and arrested Bonner and Harris, prosecutors said. During a search of the residence, police found a gun, drugs packaged for distribution, duct tape that was used to bind the woman, and items used for torture, prosecutors said.
The FBI is leading the investigation in collaboration with State Police in Vermont and police in Springfield and Claremont.
