New England Patriots rookie linebacker Quintayvious Hutchins was arraigned Wednesday in Newton District Court on a domestic assault and battery charge stemming from an altercation the night before at a Boston College residence hall, court records show.

Hutchins, 23, who played at Boston College before the Patriots drafted him last month, pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery on a family or household member. He was released on personal recognizance, records show.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were called to the fourth floor of Voute Hall for a report of a man and woman fighting in the hallway, according to a Boston College police report.

When officers arrived, Hutchins was near an elevator on the lobby level while resident assistants brought officers upstairs, according to the report.

A resident assistant told police she saw Hutchins, whom they referred to as “Q,” yelling at and pushing a 21-year-old woman. The assistant told police Hutchins accused the woman of cheating on him and “grabbed [her] by the neck” and yelled at her, according to the report.

The assistant later clarified that she did not believe Hutchins had strangled the woman but described it as “a firm grip,” according to the report.

At one point, an RA said Hutchins pushed the woman into her, according to the report.

Police reported finding clothes and a ceiling tile scattered in the hallway outside the dorm room. The woman told police “nothing happened” and said she was OK, according to the report.

Police said the woman declined a restraining order and did not want officers to photograph her neck. The report noted that officers did not observe visible marks on her neck.

Hutchins told police the dispute began after an argument about food he had brought to the woman and escalated when she threw his belongings into the hallway, according to the report.

In a handwritten statement to Boston College police contained in the report, Hutchins said the dispute began after he drove from Foxborough to bring the woman food and she was “ungrateful about the food.”

Hutchins said he then left and went down the street and “sat there for 45 minutes.”

He said he called her and she told him she gave some of his belongings back, but he said there was more stuff in her room and went back to the residence hall.

“So I tried to call the elevator to go to her room [and] she started making a scene while [people] were around,” he wrote. “All I was trying to do was go to her room so I can get my stuff.”

He said they went to the fourth floor to go to her room and she “got into my way while I was walk[ing] [and] she [threw] my stuff so I [threw] her phone.”

Hutchins told police he took her phone because he was trying to get his property back, according to the statement.

The statement said an RA came out to “try to calm the argument down” before police were called.

After interviewing witnesses, Boston College police arrested Hutchins and took him to the Newton Police Department for booking, according to the report.

When police told the woman they were arresting Hutchins, she “became visibly upset” and said to her friends she would not be going with them that night.

Hutchins was arrested on campus “following an alleged domestic assault and battery incident,” a Boston College spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

Hutchins’s attorney and his agent could not immediately be reached for comment.

In a statement, the Patriots said they are “aware of the report involving” Hutchins.

“We take these matters very seriously and are in the process of gathering additional information,” the team said. “We will not have further comment at this time.”

The charge against Hutchins was previously reported by WBZ.

The Patriots drafted Hutchins in the seventh round last month. Hutchins signed a four-year, $4.5 million rookie contract with the Patriots last weekend.
