Two drivers hospitalized after head-on crash in Bourne, police say

Two drivers were injured Wednesday in a head-on crash in Bourne, police said.

The crash happened on Sandwich Road shortly after 7:30 a.m., police said in a statement.

The crash involved a 2004 Jeep, driven by a 35-year-old North Carolina man, and a 2023 Toyota pickup truck, driven by a 43-year-old from Bourne, police said.

The pickup truck driver was flown to a hospital, while the Jeep driver was taken to a hospital by ambulance, police said.

The Cape Cod Law Enforcement Council’s crash reconstruction team responded to the scene due to the severity of the injuries, police said.

Sandwich Road was closed for nearly three hours while emergency crews treated the victims and the vehicles were removed.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, officials said.

The crash came the same morning as Governor Maura Healey announced a statewide initiative to reduce wrong-way driving incidents using detection technology, advanced signage, and roadway safety improvements.
